What's wrong with this egg?

I'm fairly new to chickens (Silkies specifically) and I just got my first 3 eggs!! The first 2 came at the end of last week and the 3rd came today! My question is about my 3rd egg... Here's what I can tell you...

1st egg- still in coop, not cracked
2nd egg- cracked when hatched. I cracked open in house to do the fertility test (positive) and the egg looked beautiful
3rd egg- cracked when hatched. I cracked open in the house and the yolk is super hard and doesn't "gel" in with the rest of the white. It looks like a hard ball.

It's cold out, so I'm wondering if this is just a simple case of it being hard because it's cold. But I split it in half and it doesn't look frozen at all. It was in the coop where the red heat lamp is, but I'm not sure of the temperature of the corner where I found it. We're in upstate NY so it's chilly out. OR, is this a sign that they have too much protein or something??

I have 5 Silkies (4 pullets and 1 cockerel). They are on layer pellets, a little scratch per day (with added grit) and I usually bring them some plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Fruits and veggies are minimal since it's winter. I'll be adding some oyster shell for the egg shells, but I'm wondering why this yolk is so weird! LOL! Hopefully my picture will upload. I put it on a saucer so you can see how firm the yolk is. (And like usual, my picture won't upload...)

It sounds as if it is frozen. With the proteins and what not in the egg at temperatures below where it will freeze it doesn't form noticeable ice crystals and acts kinda like rubber.

Thanks Den in Penn! It was in the 20s outside but not sure of the temp in the sheltered part of their coop with the red heat lamp. So it is possible it was below 32 degrees in the corner where she laid the egg and that would lead to it being a frozen egg. I was thrown off by the fact that it didn't have ice crystals inside- so thanks for the info. I was really hoping nothing was wrong with it!! It was by far, the oddest looking egg I have ever cracked!
