My mom was given about 10 gallons of well sealed whole grain wheat. It was part of some ones "end of the world as we know it" stock pile. I hear there are MANY more containers.

We are soaking it right now to see if it will sprout, but any guesses on if it is worth feeding to the chickens? Not sure if this was a cold war stash or turn of the millennium. We do know it is old but well sealed.

Any thoughts?

Whole wheat berries are great for chickens. Mine get some every day in my feed mix.

The oil in the grain will turn rancid if exposed to air for a long time. If it still sprouts, I would feed it myself. You definitely don't want to feed it if it's moldy though. That can kill chickens.

Not moldy at all, these were well sealed 5 gallon containers with the lids sealed at the "factory"

We tried tossing them a couple of handfuls in with their scratch, but they were less than excited.

I mix whole wheat with scratch and feed it as a treat to my birds. Should be fine to sprout and eat or grind into flour and make bread, rolls, pasta, long as it is clean. Sounds like a great deal.
