Here is my poor little Wheaton, Hershey. Believe it or not, she is 6 1/2 weeks old. She is the one I had to help out of the egg. Will she ever catch up on her growth or will she always be a shrimp? She is very active and runs around with the other chicks her age (and older). They are all twice her size. Is there any hope for her?

The chick behind her is a speckled Sussex and is maybe 3 days older than Hershey.

Hi! I'm new to marans and I hatched some wheatens last month. They are almost 4 weeks old now. I'm not raising them for breeding purposes so I'm not overly concerned with breed standards (in other words, be gentle with me please

). What I'm looking for is dark eggs mostly, had ordered BCM and got these as a replacement. I'm just getting to the point where I'm ready to start selling the extras off, and want to keep the ones that have the best temperament and feathering. I'm hoping some of you will know how they might feather out as adults based on their first set of feathers. The temperament I can't show you through photographs

but any input will help me make informed decisions and is much appreciated.

I have five of them, all vastly different in feathering (hence my need for input). I'd think, if I didn't know better, that I had five different breeds here! I'm fairly certain 4 are pullets and the last one is a roo. That's just my conclusion from what I know of dealing with chicks. You can try to convince me otherwise though; you guys know more about the breed.

#1 This one was chipmunk striped at hatch. She has adarker
beak too. (she also appears in the last photo)

#2 I like this one for her personality. Her breast is the
lightest of the four pullets. She had a black spot on her head
at hatch.

#3 Much like above but with darker breast with more patterning but
lighter back. No markings at hatch.

#4 VERY slow to feather, almost red and nearly no feathers on
the legs and feet. Still looks like a pullet to me though, just VERY
different from the others. Also no markings at hatch.

#5 And the cockerel. Has to be right? All that mottled black,
waddles and though you can't make it out in this photo, the
large reddish comb.

ok I will be as plainless as possible. I would only keep #3 and #5 maybe #4 just to see what it looks like more feathered out but it is scarry how little feathering it has at that age. The chipmuck strip indicated salmon is either involved or maybe they are not pure marans. Like I said tring to be very nice. If you look further back in this thread at many other pictures. Chicks normally have no real markings on them when hatch very few but some have couple little dots but with really good ones none.
