Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi everyone! I'm finally about to incubate some Wheaten eggs. I haven't had much to say since I've just been enjoying my chickens and helping my daughter enjoy them, too.

It sounds like there are quite a few mythic characters involved in the distribution of various lines of birds. Anyone have a definitive "how it all began" story for Wheatens in the US?

i think if i remember the old story. bev davis and another person created the first wheaten by breeding ftom a single odd sport from teesdale line. bev and outher person parted ways makeing / working seperatly. and budy hennery
took over the outhrr persons stock.. iv crossed cottage hill with davis line many years ago. but if diversity is your gole crossing lines is the way to go. but i wonder why you would want to. i breed deacent hens buy iv never gottem the wite tail fluff out completly in roos or the one wite feather im closed wing on roo

As I understand it - the sport chick was from one of the cuckoo lines, not teasdale. It is either RIpley or Kellerman (I can be wrong about the latter). That is why you are seeing white feathers, personally this does not bother me, because they are easily selected against for me. Some of my Cottage Hill Black Coppers have it, some do not. My oldest BCM rooster has only one white feather but he has light underfluff, half of his chicks have white feather(s) and other half are dark. There is someone that has no cotton fluff in his/her wheatens - I do not remember who, but I do remember seeing the pictures. Ms. Davis used several outcrosses of various things to get her wheaten line. But I have heard that the Cottage Hill line is pretty much the basis of several (not all) wheaten lines here in USA, I personally prefer the Cottage Hill line the best as the females have excellent type and color. There are pros and cons for each line. Someone posted a picture of a beautiful looking flock of wheatens of a cross of Cottage Hill and Cree Farms line of Bev Davis earlier in this thread.

i hope ididnt open a box of worms. i just wonder why its so hard for someone totell how they got wheaten. its not that hard a question . it just baffels me. is it pride or jelosy . i camt spell. ... 6 shots of scotch and now starts my west coast swing class... and il admit i learded from dance Dvds amd practiceing with my lamp. there i said it . thats wrre i started

Randy - I have learned that the wheatens are probably one of the least exploited marans out there. I think there are bad feelings between some people, but I do not get involved in that nor wish to be. Just enjoy the birds and share them with whoever is interested in them and hope will breed them forward as well. This is a beautiful variety that needs help.
