Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

lol .... no there's very little (if any) money to be made in backyard chickens .... some might make enough to buy feed but the getting paid by the hour is out of reach . Yes a lady was fined and made to get rid of all her chickens up here in south Alabama (Ozark) . It's not limited to big cities anymore .
I have heard of Homestead but where is the Redlands ?

redlands is a farming area between miami and homestead. Lovely place, all the potted plant farms and tropical fruit orchards and tree nurseries are here...

I'm hoping to eventually sell enough hatching eggs to pay the feed bill. Not there yet.

And that doesn't count the thousands I have tied up in equipment, pens, and the chicks and hatching eggs I've bought to get started.

Bangarang64 there should be big chickens auctions/swaps in south Florida .... the buyers up here tell me that all the chickens they buy over the southeast are hauled to the south Florida markets/swaps/auctions . I think most of the immigrants don't trust grocery store chicken .

There are some livestock auctions close by, one is 15 miles from me. However, most people are there to buy in volume, not just one to three chickens, and they don't care about pedigree (at all). Also, you wouldn't want to buy a backyard chicken there I don't think. Too many diseases are possible with the cages stacked on top of each other and the birds pooping on the ones below them.

At the two I've been to, the cages are so small that a buyer can't really see (or care) what they're getting.

OH I want to CRY !!!! Now before anyone reminds me of the risks it does not mean the disappointment won't be the same. My 11 Wheaten eggs were candled today. 4 are good and 7 had a blood ring and just stopped. ... SAD !!!! now I will have to wait till next spring. I pray the 4 left are at least a good mix of cockerels/pullets.

This is my first time with chicks. These two are 2 weeks old tomorrow. I realize that these two are probably too young to feather sex, but their seemingly dark feathers coming in, the fact that they are feathering much slower than my other breeds, their "chest bumping", and curious demeanor makes me think these are both males. What do you all think? If they are both male, anyone near Maryland want to trade me a male for a female??

This is my first time with chicks. These two are 2 weeks old tomorrow. I realize that these two are probably too young to feather sex, but their seemingly dark feathers coming in, the fact that they are feathering much slower than my other breeds, their "chest bumping", and curious demeanor makes me think these are both males. What do you all think? If they are both male, anyone near Maryland want to trade me a male for a female?? I have a wheaten marans pullet that has blue legs. Has anyone ever heard of this? We have hatched 11 wheaten marans 6 pullets and 5 Roos and only one has blueish green looking legs. These were ordered from the Garry farms and were supposed to be off Bev Davis And Buddy Henry line as pure french wheaten marans and she still looks that way other than the color of legs.
