Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

well that is a first !!! So this is my little 3 wk old.. wing feathers only and now curling

I've never seen that beforeand this is my 8th year with Wheaton

Here is a really silly question. ... Do Wheaten Marans develop slower than other Marans ? I have 1 Wheaten  ( cockerel ) that is 3 wks old ... his hatch mates whom are Black/Blue Copper Marans have full feathered wings and their little tail feathers are coming in. This little guy has sparse wing feathers and no tail feathers and is such a fluff ball still. 

sorry I don't know the answer to that questionI did have a slow grower wants but it turned out when it got over a year old it was sickly

sorry my text to speech is not working very well today. I think Wheaton will grow about the same rate as any otherI did have one I thought was a bantam because it was very small but it was a slow grower and turned out to be sickly after a year oldI'm happy to say my flock is pretty consistent with no oddities accept every once in awhile I get no leg feathering 1 out of 20 chicks

I have several colors of Marans, and I have several bloodlines of each of those colors.

Some bloodlines are very fast growers, and some are slow growers. That includes wheatens.

Another interesting trait that varies- friendliness! Some strains are friendly, and some are aloof.

As I blend bloodlines to make my own, I'm going to try to get friendliness and fast growth established in each color.

Can I ask how their wing feathers came in ? My little guy's feathers are curling.. its the oddest thing... I have 6-8wk old pullets that I bought from a gal and one of them has no back feathers. At first I thought she had been picked on but now I am not so sure. I am thinking so to develop... She is the youngest of the 4 I just got.

Mine are coming in normally. Just slow. This is from yesterday at 5 weeks and 4 days.






The curled feathers are strange, I would think a diet deficiency would be the first cause, followed by maybe a random genetic mutation.

I have all of my baby chicks on Nutria chick Starter. ACV in their water. I have done nothing different with my little guy and all the others in his hatching look great. I bought the Wheaten Eggs from Garrry Farms who sells on here. I am going to send them a picture. I think they need to know what they are breeding. IF i had other birds with this problem I would think a diet deficiency . I don't want to cull him. A friend said I should wait to a first molt.. I have more Wheaten Eggs hatching the first of July. This will be from someone local with very nice birds. I hope to get a cockerel from the hatching so then i can have an option . This is for sure not a trait i'd want to breed.

I am really hoping that someone here has some idea of what these little ones are:

Hi, I hatched these five little ones from 6 eggs I got from a Wheaten Marans I got earlier this year. I'm having a difficult time sexing a couple of these little ones as even though I set them all on the same day, one baby hatched two days later than the others. (the first egg the Marans hatched, it was marked) I'm pretty POSITIVE the first three are boys, the last two are the ones I'm not too sure about. As I am quite new to these beautiful birds, any help is greatly appreciated.


Here are the three suspected roos:






These are the two I'm really not sure about:

this little one hatched two days after the others, is smaller and quite a bit lighter than everyone else





This one hatched at the same time as the other three, but there is quite a bit less black and the chest has no black at all, unlike the first three that have back all over their chests.

Hi, the first three are for sure Males and #4 is most likely a female. I believe #5 will be a male also when it feathers in more. Randy, will be buy and should be able to tell you what he thinks. Don
