Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hi Randy,
Before you cull your existing flock of hens I would use Village chicken's suggestion of using a yellow legged rooster to identify any hens split for yellow. You have nice looking hens, it would be a shame to cull some that are not split for yellow legs.

Joe

This is good advice Randy.

Randy, you're not out of commission - you still have a good roo and two good hens (maybe even FIVE good hens), folks have started with far worse. Please let us know how things progress, and continue to post pictures for us as you "fix" your flock and rebuild. I will be breeding for a good rooster and a couple good hens this next year, and look forward to this thread growing and continuing on. You are one of the drivers on this thread, you keep it going and make it fun. Enjoy your West Coast swing, then get back in the saddle and start breeding more of those beautiful birds. (I took WC swing lessons too, when I was living on the West Coast... I loved it)

No, yellow is simple recessive.
Just get on craig's list and buy some ugly yellow legged rooster who can still do the dance, and put him with your hens one at a time. You don't need to use your wheatens. ANY yellow legged rooster will root out the hen who carries.

Craigs list in my area always has someone trying to re-home a rooster or place an ad on Craig's list looking for a rooster.

Joe

ETA ... Checked my Craigs list , found the following;

Free Rooster. Large 2-3 years old. White. Probably Leghorn. YOU MUST COME AND GET HIM. Call if interested between 10am-9pm.

Big and White and Loud. Please come take this guy. Please bring a box or something to put him in. He is a nice rooster and young but knows what he is doing. Please call

I like this one in all CAPS ... I HAVE ONE FULL GROWN ROOSTER FOR SALE. WIFE WHATS HIM GONE....WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY

Rooster 1/2 Buff Orfington. Very pretty, nice. We have two, only need one. Call

The things people will say ... Will sell beautiful rooster. Part Buff Opinger, orange in color. "He is mean" and I need to get rit of him.

We have **"47"** Mille Fleur roosters for sale... Need to sale them all.

What a HOOT!

Edited to remove phone number

Took me 5 seconds to find this guy in your area.
Good yellow legs - even has some Marans type, without the feathered shanks.
Okay, so she wants a "forever" home for him, but she doesn't need to know he's a "test" roo. Or be honest and tell her that for several months he'll get lots of action with a new lady every couple weeks, and if you can't rehome him see if she'll take him back. At least she won't be feeding him while he's on vacation at your place.

Who knows Randy - maybe you'll hook up with someone new who loves chickens as much as you do.

Randy how nice to find a yellow legged rooster keep up with the dancing lessons maybe you can find a yellow haired girl that enjoys your company chickens and all......and you wont need to put her in a pen you silly guy

Randy's sister here - just so you know I am not letting him get rid of the two yellow legged youngsters (and a normal legged sibling, and 1 other original hen). These yellow legs (and their sibling) have turned out to be the most friendly chickens we've had (and they LOVE me!), so they are going into our "general population" hen house with our EE's, silkies, and plymouth rocks because although they aren't breeding quality, they will still lay the biggest eggs.

And although we won't be having any babies for a while, I'll make sure he still gets on the thread to update you all on what is happening.

Cheers everyone!
