Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Just heard back, and so far no losses. Got just one week left, and we're back in Hungary. The kid taking care of them is having a heyday hatching eggs from my birds. I'm glad for him.

Yeah Berk how's the yellow leg gene hunt going for you?

We have Wheaten Marans, Black Copper, Bresse Gauloise in white and black, and Araucanas (and a whole bunch of mixed barnyard layers).
My Wheaten hens are the most eye catching, especially when they are not too dark.

So did you test your Buddy Henry hens first Randy?

i wish i understood how the rooster plays a part in this , im not sure i understand how two completly looking birds (hen & rooster ) could have anything to do with each outhers colors or why its so random ,, i only produced a few ,,, less than 3 , in the many i have hatched that are to dark , of corse i couldnt tell the roosters but hens its easy to see to much mohogany like u pointed out a long time ago and u set me stright ....

the one carring the hidden yellow is gone and i have a few daughters to work threw ,,,, takes forever , egg color is great on a few 4 gen birds wich is nice

Hi, y'all! I'm new to the world of wheaten marans and have some questions.
I have hatched out two rounds of chicks from two different breeders. Round one was a failure. I got one chick out of 24 eggs and she has a leg turned in. I really like her coloring though. I am unsure if the leg thing is genetic or if it was a hatching error. I am thinking that breeding her is a no no. She is a nice even color though.

Round two came from a different breeder whose chickens looked more like those of the girl that hatched in round one. The babies though have come out with black lacing almost. They don't look anything like the baby that come out of round one. Two of them seem to be roosters. One is coloring in like what I see adult wheaten males look like. The other is almost solid black on his body.

My questions is will the black molt out as they age? Will they ever look like the first girl? The standard seems to look more like the first hatch than the second. Is this correct? I'm wondering if perhaps this second round is not the quality I thought it was.

What do y'all think?
