Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Pictures are great for everyone and to me adult picks are most helpful chicks under 10 dats are perty much the same .yellow or white. as far as blues .i havwnt a clue personaly i dont like that they dont breed true to color so it takes 3 coops to keep them sort of ... but please post pics asap id love to see them

Have you heard that wheaten cockerels hatch out with Black wing tips at birth? They can actually be sexed immediately. Bev Davis posted that on a thread a while back. I found it interesting and will have to test that theory out in the future.

I still need to get someone to help me get pics of my 2 1/2 mo old Davis chicks. I'm narrowing down my Roo choices. My first one to crow is a clean legged blue, so unfortunately for him, he'll be dinner. I have 3 I'm really watching, a wheaten, a blue wheaten, and a splash wheaten. Bev said I could have any or all present in these. Being so new to them, I just don't know what to keep. But I'm afraid if I keep only one, and something happens to him, I'm screwed. It will not be easy to get another pure Davis Roo.

We never keep just one roo, always have a back up even if he has to live most of the time in a bachelor pad. You may not even loose the first. Just because you pick him above the rest does not mean he WILL produce what makes you happy. Always keep a back up! We rotate our roos to see who actually throws what we are looking for and to keep more diversity in the flock. Good luck !

You are such a sweet guy! Mine are due to hatch on June 9th. Fingers crossed here that some of his little soldiers are still doing combat!

I just sold 8 Silkie chicks, and the woman knows another gal that will want the rest of my Partridge flock. Need the space for the Wheatens and other colors of Silkies. It is raining Silkie chicks here! Every last hen went broody, and pen 2 is still hatching since Wednesday? So far, 7 on the ground, with about 8 more eggs to go.

Trying to take pictures of the little ones is like trying to count flies!

Hmm, I'd like to see pics of that myself. Never heard that one before. If mine hatch, I will remember to look for that. But on new chicks, there are no wings tips per se, only down. Are you saying the down is colored black at the ends? Randy, does this sound like anything you've noticed?

Yes... The down. I have to think its true because while she sold me straight run chicks, she made sure exactly half of my chicks were cockerels. Too perfect for chance... ;)
