hello,
i'm very new to raising backyard chickens. i currently have 4 pure BCM, 4 Black Ameraucana and a couple olive eggers(may be EE that's what i was told). Anyway, i do have this one young Wheaten Maran Roo that looks really cool with colors. i'd like to keep him but I don't want to mix with my pure breeds. If I breed him with the Olive or EE what would i get? or can i breed him with 1 or 2 BCM / AM and what would i get? I know mutts, but has anyone done this?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya I'm sure one of our genetics folks will be along soon, in the meantime if you search here for genetics calculator that might give you a start.

Hi
if you do breed this young Marans Wheaten Marans roo, do not cross him with the black copper Marans. it will create a big genetic mess . it happened about 15 years ago in the Marans breed and they're still trying to clean it up .
what will happen is the Wheaton will disappear behind the black Copper Maran coloring. then you won't know whether you have split birds or purebred as you breed them together later on. the Wheaten will corrupt Black Copper Marans color and ruin the chicks. and you can't sell them as anything but Mutts. it's it's a a real problem in the breed having Wheaton mixed in with the black copper Marans. you could do it with a black Americana I guess.
with the olive egger , you would be crossing a dark brown egg breed with a green egg layer . some what you would get is even darker green eggs. Best ,
Karen
