Wheels, axels, and weight

So now I *finally* have decided how I'm going to manage a mobile coop--a coop modeled after a (large) garden cart/barrow that can butt up to a separate, lightweight run.

The "cart" portion, of course, needs wheels. The run will be awkward but not impossible to move for one person, but just fine to move with two people.

Anyhow, my plan was to use bicycle or salvaged garden-cart wheels, because a) they'd look best, proportionally, on the structure, and b) the larger radius would help keep me from getting stuck in dips in our yard.

My trouble is that I can't find any plans for actually attaching wheels like that, or any evidence of how much weight they can handle. Anyone out there good with that sort of thing who would be able to give me details on how to attach the wheels?

There may well be a better way. Probably someone will post several. But if it wuz me, I would use the forks off an old junker bicycle(s), saw them off so you're just using the relevant portion, and bolt it to the tractor frame. Ta da. Crude but simple.

Actually though I'd be more inclined to use old *wheelbarrow* wheels, on an appropriately sized bolt as an axle, because they will dig into soft ground a lot less and therefore be less apt to get stuck and/or rut your lawn up when you move the tractor in damp weather.

Most bicycles and good garden carts can easily handle up to 300 lbs, so you should be *fine* below that. How much more they could carry, I dunno.

Good luck, have fun, post lotsa pics once it is done!!

Hmm, good point on the wheelbarrow wheels. I might even bee able to get them with fittings, then I've got wheels AND axles out of the way.

I've got the same problem; how to attach the wheels to my tractor. I just posted the question and someone linked me to a post that had a great idea. I'd send you the link, but I'm new at this forum-stuff and I'm not sure how. The name of it is "Wheels on a tractor--here's how". I hope it helps.
