wheezing/braying hen

Okay, so she isn't a new bird. Just keep her separated and keep a watch on the rest of the flock. Who knows, maybe she got stung by something that she is allergic to.

I hope it's something that simple. I did give them all some scrap hay to scratch in this morning, and they were doing some exploring.

I have a hen doing the same thing.I came on here to see if I could figure out what was wrong with her.Mine is a EE too.About 7 months old and has been laying eggs good.Mine was hatched here on my farm in Jan.I watched the video and your hen even looks like mine and the sound is the same.It has been hot here too and I have extra water and plenty of shade for her.I read about treating her with the tylan 50.I have Tetroxy HCA-280 soluble powder. Is that the same type of antibiotic? And if so,how much would I give one 7 month old hen?Should I treat the others in the same pen?I am wondering if someone knows what this could be or are we just treating something unknown?I am not trying to hi-jack your thread just hoping to get help for my hen.I figured since your video showed what mine was doing it would be OK.Thanks to everyone trying to help. And good luck with your hen,she is a very pretty young lady.

Well, I have a round bale that I pull hay off of for horses, and whatever falls on the ground I give to the chickens, so yes it was mainly dust. What would it have done to her? What would moldy hay do?

Sometime in the middle of the night, the sound stopped! What does this mean!? She seemed fine this morning, and even clucked at me when I stuck my finger in at her.

lil'turkeymama, I hope we can find out what this thing is!

I think that she inhaled the dust...and mold can grow in their lungs and kill. I wouldn't be giving them that any longer.

I'm almost positive that there wasn't any mold in it, just a lot of dust. They've been scratching around in dried grass that's wrapped around a bush hog as well for the past few days, but I definitely won't give them that hay anymore. I guess I'll keep her separated today to see if she does it anymore.

I had a rooster like this. He'd only start wheezing when the temps got above 105. I treated him with Tylan 50 and it didn't change a thing. He was just more sensitive to the heat than the others. I eventually culled him for this among other things, his genes didn't need to be carried on.

So, I think it's just the heat. That hen is simply more heat sensitive than the others. It happens, just do all you can to keep them cool.

I wanted to update that my 7 mth old EE hen is not making that noise this morning. It is still really hot,95 with the heat index at 105.She seems fine other than panting some. But with this heat they are all pretty much panting. She is with 5 of her sibling hens and she is the only one that made that sound.I have a large self blue bantam roo with them and have already hatched 6 chicks that 3 are light and dark blue and 3 that are more brown chocolate and they are all pullets.I am so glad they are going to be OK.I was so scared I was going to have to start culling and that would just break my heart. Now I think they will be fine when it starts cooling off.It was a wake up call for me.I went to jeffers and ordered $80 of stuff just for my chickens.Next time I have a scare I'll have anything I might need.I am so glad to hear the OP hen is better too. Thanks everyone for the help and support.
