When my daughter went out to see her chickens this morning, one of the two ladies was wheezing badly. It still is hours later. We can't figure out what's wrong. The Vet (yes...i took it to the local vet) took blood and stool samples...no parasites or worms etc.. her lungs are cler. She just can't seem to breathe. The Vet irrigated her crop and pulled some stones out but he can only think she has eaten too many? Does anyone else know of a possible reason for this wheezing? She won't eat or drink....I'm afraid she won't make it through the night.

Also...if it is too many stones..what could be causing her to ingest more than she needs for food digestion?

I can't imagine that she's eaten to many stones. They are smarter than that most generally and only pick up what they need.

My first thought is that she could possibly be egg bound. Did you or your vet check for that? That will cause them to wheeze, as they are trying so hard to push that egg out.

Second, be sure you keep her separated from the rest of the flock just in case. Provide a nice warm, dark place for her.

Wish I could help more.

Any chance you put new shavings or straw/hay in the coop? My other question would be whether they are still eating and drinking well and if they are as active as usual. Be sure there is good ventilation in their hen-house as the moisture and ammonia can cause respiratory problems too. If they don't improve quickly check the sticky on medical emergencies in the index and post with your answers. Hope they improve--sending my good wishes for them to do so!
