1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Tetra Brown, approx. 3 years old, normal/plump weight (no swollen crop or emaciation)

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
This morning (4/6/21), her normal 'squawking' sounded a bit more raspy than usual. Now, she is making an odd sound on nearly every exhale, like a wheezing or "crying". No gaping mouth or other symptoms (no swollen sinuses, no weeping eyes or mouth, healthy, perky, vibrant comb and waddles).

She is slightly more withdrawn and not foraging as much as she normally does, but no other symptoms or lethargy - she is still active and alert and socializing with her (small) flock.

She did lose a flock mate about 1.5 weeks ago (due to being severely egg bound and having a previous bout with salpingitis) who was the top of the pecking order and the leader of the sweet hens (RIP Popcorn :hit)

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Since about 1:00 pm, PDT today (4/6/21)

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
None that we can see

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Initial theories I have:

1. She may be in mourning, and depressed over the recent loss of their flock matriarch.
2. Our rooster may have been too aggressive while mating, and pushed her to the ground too hard (we did not see or hear any signs of a struggle though).

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Normal chicken feed, fortified with calcium (oyster shells), meal worms, 'Golden Nuggets' and water with NutriDrench added.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Good urine salts, but a bit runnier than usual

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
So far, just NutriDrench

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
We do not have a farm or poultry vet nearby, so self treatment and diagnosis is the only option (unfortunately)

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Straw floored run (3'x8') and pine shavings in the roost and laying boxes (3'x3' - 6 laying boxes).

UPDATE - 4/7/21

Well, today (Juicy) Apple seems to be back to her normal self. She is no longer making the sound as described above and in the video. She was spry and eager to get out of the roost this morning and get to foraging with her friends (Cheesy and Chocolate).

Of course, we will continue to monitor and evaluate, but I am still very curious as to what that sound was and if there's an underlying problem or concern.

Perhaps my theory #1 was correct and she was just depressed and mourning the loss of her Flock Leader (Popcorn), and the sound was her "crying"(?). 😥

It sounds like she has some stridor, a sound made when there is something slightly blocking the airway. This might be swelling, mucus, or a foreign body. Since she is doing some head shaking, she might have a bit of a respiratory thing or some reaction to dust in the coop or run. Feed can also cause thepis and a sneeze occasionally.

Thank you for the reply and feedback @Eggcessive!

We were wondering if she had something in her throat, but we will look into these (stridor and thepis) a bit more and keep an eye/ear out today. So far, she is eating/drinking just fine and seems to be back to her normal routine.

UPDATE - 4/8/21

Apple is still doing well and the sound has subsided. She's back to her normal sound and behavior.

I'm hoping it was just a tickle or something in her throat that is no longer there. It was definitely a "new" sound for us and we were a bit alarmed, due to the frequency and duration (all day).
