when and normal...

Some breeds of chickens are relatively quieter than others- but none are really quiet! When they lay an egg, they announce it. When they see a bug, they announce it. When they see, think about or do anything, they announce it!

Chickens are flockers, they live within a flock- meaning they have a need to share information all the time. Hens are quiet at night, but roosters go all the time because they are the protectors of the flock.

That's good, just give them some fresh eggs every now and then. It really helps in the long run. I live out side the town, but I know my neighbors hear my roos- along with a dozen others!

Just hang tight until you have your own place in the country- meanwhile, keep learning more about chickens, there is sooooo much info in the Index!

I have 2 roosters. One standard one bantam.

They both crow all the time, day and night. Here is the difference. My standard rooster is loud and deep and it is such a beautiful sound. My bantam....LOL he is loud and shrill and screeches (my husband says it sounds like someone is killing him)...sounds much like nails on a chalk board.

I love them both dearly, wouldn't trade either for the world, but nope, they aren't the least bit quiet!!!

Oh, and I know some say this just won't work, but my bantam has two hens, my standard has 5. All fertile eggs so they are mating just enough, all girls fully feathered, no injuries at all. I just have awesome roos!!!

Well, whether Bantam or Standard, there are going to be pluses and negatives with any type. It's really a case of doing some research and deciding what your goal is. For instance- I wanted egg layers, who could double as meat birds if necessary. After seeing that Barred Rocks are good for both, and they are usually pretty calm, I decided that's what I wanted.
I ended up with an EE rooster though a weird situation, but my neighbors don't complain, or he'd be gone.

The Bantams are great pets, but I won't get any more once these die. Too little meat, tiny eggs and the rooster is a mean-tempered guy. A lot of people have very nice bantams, who are great birds!

It all depends upon YOU defining YOUR goal.

Roosters crow, all roosters of all types, banties and full size, and most roosters crow at all different times. Your neighbor objects. Getting another one, would be bad manners and show poor judgement.

Enjoy your hens, even see if you can get another couple if you like, then share the extra eggs with your neighbor. If you gently get your neighbor to enjoy the eggs, and maybe he'll see how funny they are and how nice it is to have them eating bugs and pests and providing breakfast, he'll hopefully mellow in time, but it will likely take time.
