I have 3 RIRs and we got our first egg today at 20 weeks exactly. It's tiny but perfectly formed, a good hard shell, very clean. Can I eat it? Or is it like when you get a new ice-maker and you throw out the first few batches? My girls are free-ranging on 4000 square feet of lawn, eating layer pellets, cherries, grapes, yogurt, and every bug, slug and spider on the property. They were on medicated crumbles for the first month or so. I guess I'm just wondering if there's a 'breaking in' period before the eggs are edible?

I never waited!! Eat it.....enjoy!

eat it! The first one is no different than that 100th one except it's smaller! We've eaten every one we've gotten since they very first one and they've been fantastic! Congrats on the first egg... it's so exciting!

get in line, the kids get the first one, then the other kid gets the second one, then they split the third one, then DW thinks she needs to have a fresh one........ Eventually you have to decide that the NEXT egg is yours, and stick to your guns and eat it all by yourself(or in front of everyone else, and do this

It came from one of my bantam cochins. So imagine how small it was. Everyone wanted me to cook it. I couldn't my DD had to. DS ate it, all the while my DD saying that was one expensive egg.

lol yeah... my first egg was about an $8,000 egg!

but they get better quickly. Now i'm averaging under $80 per egg... and the girls are still just getting started. What a deal! Worth every penny in my mind
