Hi,

I've just bought 3 Isa Brown pullets.

I'm just wondering how long I should keep the new chickens in their coop, so when I let them out into the garden, they know to go back into it at night.

It's been years since I've had chickens, but I seem to remember having to go and find them in the bushes for a while, until they got to know their sleeping quarters.

Also, they don't seem to be getting on their perch. Should I physically put them them on the perch?

Thanking you.

Whoops.

Just realised I posted this in the wrong area.

Please accept the apologies of a first timer!

from Vermont!

I would say a week or so in the coop would help your girls realize it was their "home". After that you could start letting them out a couple hours before dusk, and then once they are used to going into the coop for bedtime you could let them out earlier. If they are not using the roosts at night, you could go in after dark and put them up there.l They should stay the night and hopefully after a few days they'll start putting themselves there.

It is nice to have you here at BYC!
