I bought my chicks from a feed store on 3/13/14. They looked less than a week old when I got them. Since I have had them I haven't been super carefulf their temperature... it hovers at about 75 degrees. They don't act like they're cold, and are feathering out really nicely. So, when can I take them to their outside home? I've read anywhere from 4-8 weeks of age, but is there any way to tell if they're ready to be outside? Right now they're living in my bedroom... weird I know, but that's the safest place for them away from my puppies and cat. Needless to say, I am excited to have them out of my bedroom, but don't want to rush it. Thoughts anyone??

Hi there, you don't say where you are located, but basically if you are keeping them comfortable at 75F, I would slowly reduce the heat in your brooder and when there is less than 10 degree difference between outside temp and inside temp, take them out for a few hours. Observe them closely and if they don't seem to be adversely affected you have reached your goal. I'm in tropical NY - so wouldn't even consider taking them outside until the air temp hits 50-60F,

I'm in central Iowa and the temperature is just super bipolar. It was 40 today but is supposed to be around 70 on Sunday, haha. Hopefully it's nice enough tomorrow that I can take them outside!

Yeah - if the temp is so volatile it's going to be hit/miss on a daily basis. IF Spring ever arrives, you will be able to leave them outside quite safely. Good luck with waiting for spring...........
