I have 2 roosters so I know that the eggs are fertile. Any advice on hatching pullet eggs or what size should they be? How long until the hens lay "large" eggs?

Thanks!

I would like to know the answer to that also. I have some new layers that the rooster has taken a liking to also.
Sorry I couldn't help.

I had a nice group that I hatched from my Buff Orpington pullets when they were 8 months old... They weren't huge eggs but they were medium to large & I got some lovely chicks from them. I just had 10 month old pullets hatch out 3 eggs ea & they turned out well too. Of course they're older now to do that I guess. How old are your pullets?

17 weeks old Friday... I bet the eggs will be larger soon but when?

oh yea well see my girls didn't start laying until5 months old (20 to 21 wks I thinkit was) & my Black Austrolorp was like 6 weeks older than the rest & she'd started laying in December . the eggs were small for like the first 2 or 3 wks but they were consistant in laying so that out of my 5 hens I was averaging 3 to 4 eggs a day & by the end of Feb. the eggs were a pretty good size... I'd tried incubating shipped eggs in late Feb. early March but I waited I think a couple more weeks before trying the eggs from the back yard just because of the hens still being so young etc. But by April I had done an experimental hatching & got a real nice group from them & I'd sold them to someone who was very pleased... I think your hens are younger starting & so maybe a couple months before they're giving you a hatching quality.... I would look to the end of August if it were me.

I'm curious about this too. What makes them "hatchable"? If they're fertile, shouldn't they hatch, even though small? I just got my first tiny egg from my babies yesterday. My mom is going to start a flock and I'd like got give her some of my eggs to hatch.

ETA: They're almost 19 weeks.

I just put any eggs I want in the bator. If they hatch, they hatch. I would rather have a small chick than no chick, especially when I am doing a multi-generational project breeding and want to see what traits are being carried sooner rather than later. I have routinely hatched small eggs from first week laying pullets. The chicks start out small but they catch up. I just keep crackin the pullet eggs until I find a bullseye on one and when I do, into the bator go the rest! Good luck! Post pics of the eggs!

As long as they're fertile I guess it doesn't really matter right? When mine started it wa winter & I wasn't really ready & I don't know why but I thought perhaps there might have been a developmental thing with the pullets being so young. But I guess an egg is an egg.
