When can you tell a chick is a rooster?

My chick charlie[1 of 6 chicks] is almost 4 weeks old i think she might be a rooster. if you know how to tell if a chick is a rooster please tell me bye

It doesn't look like a rooster to me, but I could be wrong. I was able to tell two of my black australorps were roosters at 4 weeks because their combs and wattles started developing wayyy too fast. As if their appearance wasn't clue enough, there was their behavior.


Of course, some varieties develop faster than others, and the differences between hens and roosters will become apparent at different times and in different ways.

she might just be getting bullied, maybe the other chicks see her as weak because she is healing, I dont know, but If it were my chick, i'd just leave her seperated till she was completly healed, You don't say where/what you have these chicks in, but each chick should have at least a sq ft of space, and access to fresh food and water 24/7 , so if you have six chicks, they should be in a 2X3 sq ft place of space, This space increases as they get bigger, so your pen is going to have to get bigger as they grow.oh and my measurements are just what i read from my research, I am sure alot of others have their own values for "chick spacing"

Hen pecking happens, alot when they just dont have enough "ME" space, lol hey all of us ladies should be able to relate!!

She crowd the other chicks and pecks them but the other chicks did peck all her tail feathers out it was all bloody she is separated now I don't know when to put her back with them

Once the wound has healed it should be safe to put her back with the other chicks. I have to wonder though why your chicks are being so aggressive towards each other. Do they have enough room/food/water? Are they bored?

yes they have all that and i do not know why but the worst are my RI reds, and every time it heals i put her back i watch, they pech, and its bloody. i am a new chicken owner and i dont know if it is infected.it looks like this now.......gross pic sorry
