When chicks are able to be left outside

I took a piece of (painters) plastic and covered up half of the front of the brooder in the colder nights and left heat lamp shining in on the other side. The front of the brooder is the only open side the other three sides are 3/4" plywood... I'm not saying that my way of bringing up my chicks is the best way or the way anyone else should do it if they dont feel comfortable doing it all im saying is thats how i do it and my birds turned out fine and healthy. I vacc for mareks and let em go!

To be honest, back when...prolly near 20 yrs ago, I didn't know ANYONE who brooded in their houses. It was the barn, or the garage, or a broody hen...when I first came on here, I said, much has changed since I used to raise chickens. The ONLY reason they are in my cabin right now, is I don't have a barn, a garage, and the coop wasn't done!!!

I don't think any one way is "the best" way. I just think, as you do, that all the different ways that people brood their chicks is their way of doing it. I also don't see anything wrong with brooding right in the coop! Maybe if I lived in Alaska and got my chicks in January, I would have them in my house, but with the invention of heat lamps, we used to only have regular light bulbs too, I just believe brooding them in their coop is fine! Especially if it is spring time!!! or the middle of summer, like it is now!!! I was never so glad to see my thermometer read the right ambient temp on the counter, so I could turn off the lights and finally sleep!!!!

Thanks for everyone's opinion on this subject. I just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing something by raising mine the way i was and i see now that im not its just to each their own.

IMHO the only things you are missing is the mess and being kept awake all night

and in this weird summer heat, sweating to death to keep the temps correct for the chicks!!! Soon I can turn the fan on at night!!!

All of which I wish I could have bypassed

This will be the only year I put myself through this! As I am starting from scratch with hatchery chicks! I'm praying next year, I will have a mamma chicken to do this for me or atleast I will set up the brooder in the coop!!!!

You sound like you have a great setup. I'm headed to bed, as the chicks will be up at dawn, and so will I! Was great talking with you. Hope to do it again sometime! Would LOVE to see some pics of your coop setup and chickens too! Nite
