When do chickens begin to roost?

I forgot to add, mine roost on anything they can find if they grow up in the garage brooder. As soon as they learn to fly to the top of the plywood walls of the brooder they roost up there. Once I found them roosting in the rafters! When they get that big I usually have to kick them out, because they poop everywhere.

In my coops I have 2x4's that they roost on. Some of them also sleep on top of the nest boxes.

Some of my birds roost and some like to lay in the litter on the floor.

My 8 week old babies are all piling on the two 5 gallon feed buckets.

Some of my 15 week old pullets just started roosting. I thought I had build the roosts wrong too because it took them forever to use them. Now they fill up the roosts and any other space off the floor.

Maybe they start earlier if you have a small roost in their brooder. I did not build my roosts until they were about 6 weeks old.
