When do chickens lay?

I'm still in the waiting camp. Mine are over 26 weeks, have redish combs, but when I approach, they still run. I handled them every day as chicks, but still they are skittish. I keep hoping one day I'll get my dark brown, and blue eggs.

Guys I feel like a fool! How do I let chickens play me so badly. I just found 6 perfect eggs.. hidden, under bedding. So happy I have layers now!!! :celebrate

My hens first played eggs on the ground. How I fixed that was to put the real eggs in the nest box. The hen sees the egg, and from my experience, she would want them all in the same location. So she would lay her next egg with the real egg. Don't worry, the egg is not going to spoil if you leave it there over night. It's just a way to let her know the proper place to lay her eggs.
You might want to consider the nest box. If she does not have privacy, then that may be why she is not laying in the nest box.

Actually I found the single one on the ground and then these 6 were bunched up together inside the coop next to the raised nest boxes but I will try that out putting an egg in the box. Thanks

Laying age for Orpingtons, can be up to 30 - 36 weeks, since they are a large breed. Road Island reds should be laying by now, but may be hiding them as others have said.
