When do Silkies tend to begin laying?

janie's silkies :

:My silkies started laying around 6 months, however after several months of laying they are molting .Ihave heard this can take a month or two. They have stopped laying and it has been very cold here in lex. ky. Today is the first nice day so I chased them out of the hen house for some sunshine in my garden.

I wouldn't mind being chased out of the house for some sunshine and warmth. It's 38 degrees here today, which is a HEAT WAVE by recent weather standards. Brrrrrr. That my chickens began laying on the coldest month of 2009 and have continued to be wildly productive is a miracle!

I know what you mean. I was going outside today without a coat. It was up to 30 degrees today and the sun was out.

I hatched some July 4th and just got two eggs yesterday and three eggs today... so... in my case, six months? ish?

My three silkie sisters started laying within 3 weeks of one another, at around 7.5 to 8 months. They were hatched last January 21st, and didn't start laying until August.

From what I've read, it may also be affected by the time of year they're born...If they hit potential "laying age" when it's winter and the days are shorter, they may not start laying until the days get longer.

Look who I found in a nesting box this morning!!! Whether she comes up with the goods or not remains to be seen, but at least she's warming up in the batter's box!
