When do they start to fly?

gosh I'm glad I saw this thread! My little fluff balls are about a week and a half old and they sure do keep looking upwards. They're in a plastic storage tub but it won't be long before they're big enough to simply jump over, not even taking flying into consideration. We do have the lid for the tub and BF cut a hole on one end to let the heat lamp shine through and another on the other side for ventilation. I guess I'll be putting that lid on as soon as I get home!

I'm glAd I found this thread too! My chicken babies are one week old today. I have them in a brooder that looks like a mini circus ring. I transferred chicks to a plastic tub so I could clean out their bedding and one nearly jumped right out! Guess ill pick up some chicken wire tomorrow.

My 2 3-week olds have both gotten out of the brooder this morning. The 2 2-weekers are getting some air but haven't got the aim yet

Oh yes! At 2 weeks they will be able to jump/hop/fly to the top of the brooder box, unless it's a particularly deep one. They will be getting restless and wanting to stretch their wings, as they are developing quickly.

Oh boy, wait till you take them outside for the first time! Depending on where you live, it may already be warm enough to take the chicks outside for a little while, then you'll see them work out their flight muscles. It was 80 degrees here in the Bay Area this past weekend.

I was hoping to make another spot in the back yard behind the shed and raise a few fryers, but the 4ft fence don't sound like it will keep them in till they are 4 months and ready for butchering. Oh well on to plan two!
