and if I had eggs to get I'd do it after they were laid too! We still haven't had any eggs... since last August!!!!! What the ?????

My girls were lazy today I only got 8 eggs. But I have been backing off on the light for them, to get them to slow down.

When I feel like it.

So far I've yet to find eggs in the morning unless I didn't collect in the evening. They only lay late.

I said before I am in FL, how long is too long to leave an egg in the nesting box before it goes bad on me. In the summer it can easily be 97 degrees or hotter. I'm not worried about it now because its been cool out.

I don't worry too much about when I gather my eggs. I usually spend most of my time outside and probably check for eggs three or four times a day. On the rare occasion that I don't feel like going out, like when I am very sick, I still have to go and check on the chickens at least once a day. I check that they are ok and that they have feed and water. I still may not check for eggs. Eggs keep for a long time. I don't have to worry about them freezing where I live. In the summer I try not to leave them longer than 24 hours.
My grandmother didn't have a refrigerator and never got sick from eating eggs. It is temperature changes that allows the pores in eggs to change and lets bacteria in. That being said, I still refrigerate my eggs as soon as possible, but when I don't have room in the fridge, I leave them in the coolest place I have and keep the temperature even. Not in a place where it gets real warm and then cools down and then gets warm again.

Since a couple of my girls started laying, I'll check for eggs in the morning when I let them out, and in the evening when I close up their coop for the night. During those days that I have off, I get a little more nutty about it, and check when the mood strikes. hehe

I think we check our girls at least 10 times a day. I homeschool, and there is nothing the kids enjoy more than checking the chickens. They fight over who gets to check for eggs.

Goofy kids!! Our girls lay anywhere from 7am til bedtime. It really depends on the day. Somedays they're early others they're really late. Today was a late day.

I collect eggs usually 4 to 5 times a day. Well I only have 6 laying hens so I "check" for eggs 4 to 5 times a day.
