When do you give up on a non-layer?

I have 2 hens and a cockerel.

Chloe - she's an ex battery hen. She laid an egg a day, every day, for the first 10 months that I had her. Then she began laying soft shelled eggs, and because these are so easy to break, learned to eat them. She went into a moult in September and hasn't laid an egg since.

In October Bonnie, a welsommer, came to live with us. Hatched last April, she has only just started to lay, this week. [5 eggs since Monday]

I don't care that Chloe isn't laying any more. She did her time in the battery cages, and deserves a happy retirement, doing what chickens do [apart from laying eggs]. She's a real character and very tame. Fortunately, despite her best efforts, she is unable to eat Bonnie's eggs as the shells are very strong. In our case the chickens are definitely pets. [these chickens come to school with me and live there during the week, cared for by the pupils]

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. We enjoy watching the chickens but their job is egg laying so we'll be chicken shopping this weekend! JD
