When do you usually put your chickens in the coop for the night?

When do you usually put your chickens in for the night? When it gets dark or......?

They go into the coop on their own - about 5 minutes to pitch black.

Also how do you get your chickens to roost on the nice stick you put up for them and not the nesting box?

If the nesting box is flat on top, then you need to taper the roof so they can't stand on it. It should be about 36" off the floor. a 2x4 flatwise would be ideal for balance and keeping their feet warm in the winter. Good luck.

Hi, I'm new to BYC, however have had chickens before. I've got a new flock of 5 Australorpes, approx 1-1/2-2 months old. They are in a large fenced in area, coop is in the middle. I
like to close their coop door at night due to predators, however they will not go back into their coop at night. They have been in the fenced area for 2 weeks now. The first week when coop door was opened, they did not venture outside, this week (#2) they are all outside but at night, I have to go out and put them back in the coop and close the door. The last flock we had went in every night at dusk. Any advise? Thanks Lisa

Maybe give them special chickie treats till they go in on their own at dusk. Good luck.
