I have a small bantam coop. It's 4 x 4 without the nest boxes, it's 4 x 6 with them. Do you count that area when figuring out square footage?

I would def count it.....assuming the nest boxes are high enough off the ground that chickens can walk under them?

I would not count nest boxes as extra space, because they should be used for laying and brooding only..

I wouldn't count the nest box area. The chickens aren't supposed to be there for anything other than laying, so it shouldn't contribute to the total area in which they are able to move about. It's a lot like the situation in which a garage is not considered living space and is therefore not included in the square footage of a home.

No, I wouldn't count it. It's neat when they're an add-on that hangs on the outside with an access lid. Mine are elevated to keep floor space. I have my roosts higher, to avoid roosting on the nests.

^^^^^^^

if the boxes are elevated how can u not count it........if its floor space its floor space

Quote: If they were "elevated" and inside, with floor space under them, the coop would be 4 X 6 whether you counted them or not.
It sounds more to me like they are on the outside of the wall.
