They definitely smell!! I got my first leaking egg - I'm just glad it didn't explode. I opened it and it smelled worse than any stink bomb

LOL exploders aren't that common. I haven't ever had one and I have lots of hatches. Of course I candle a couple more times than I need to and catch dead eggs early now.

I had a friend who had a bad egg and yep, you can tell and get it before it goes if you pay attention.

Then there was the brother of someone on here who lifted a bad one to his face and had it blow up there. EWWWG.

I hope to have continued good luck because I've smelled bad eggs in the coop before... uck.

I know you said you're turning the eggs while you candle them. I think I remember reading somewhere on BYC that you should not turn them upside down when you do it, otherwise you could hurt the embryo.

Maybe someone here has more knowledge about this?
