When is it all too much?

I just love it when folks sit around and wonder how other peoples hard earned money could better be spent. And I think that is a lot of why this Country is in trouble. Politicians spending our money like it is theirs. Isn't what we all do OUR business, and in the end God will judge. But for now, If I put my chickens in a castle or a shoebox, THAT should be up to me.

WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!!!!

If you think we all need to give to the poor and take less for ourselves...great, do it!!!

If you think whats mine is mine because I work hard for it...great, that works too!!!

None us have the right to tell anyone else how to live or how to spend their own money. If you have a recycled coop...cool, the planet will thank you. If you can afford a chicken mansion...awsome...the chicken gods smiled down on you.

Lets all just be happy that we are alive and have these lovely creatures known as chickens......

I spoil all my animals (dogs, cats, 3 rats, a treefrog, a turtle and the chickens) it makes me happy. But I truly completely believe in helping less fortunate. I love all things, I feel that you should do what you can for others but you also have to give to yourself. There is alot of things that we can "waste" our money on, but taking care of the things we love and helping people is not a waste in my opinion. There are some coops that are extravagent, I personally will not be building anything even close, but I appreciate them and the work that went into them. Chickens are very relaxing and enjoyable to me..

To each there own..

One of the things I love about BYC is how inclusive it is. All sorts of different people with totally differing opinions on how to do things - EVERYONE WELCOME!

My coop was built for cheap, but only because we were lucky enough to have some left over and recycled materials available to us. We live someplace that we have to keep our neighbors feelings and the town requirements into consideration when building anything so it has to look pretty good. I think most urban / suburban living people are in the same boat.

I don't think that it was the intent of the original poster to infer that people who spend a lot of money on their coop were "wrong or bad", he was just posing the idea that everything can be taken to excess, even chicken owning. Then again, I always tend to give people the benefit of a doubt, and I really enjoy discourses and discussions on what ever the subject. And if we are truly honest with ourselves, all of us are guilty of looking at someone and saying "well that's just excessive". But what is excessive to one person, is reasonable to the next, so live and let live. I have probably spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on my coop and run, not because it is the Taj Mahal of chicken coops (in fact it's really quite ugly), but because I have made it as secure against predators as humanly possible. And that takes a lot of fencing and wiring which costs money!

So, if you want to spend thousands and have the Taj Mahal of coops, great. More power to you. If you want to make it all out of recycled material and flea market finds, that's great too. The point is, we all own chickens, we all love our chickens and we all do the best that we can for our chickens. So can't we all just be happy with our "common ground"?

There is always common ground . . . people just disagree on how you get there.

I knocked down an exsisting shed built by 6 pack construction and could only salvage 4x4's and 2x4's, got a nice 3/0 5/0 window from a renovation job and tin roofing left over from my families barn down the road. The coop is weather tight, predator tight. Corniced, painted out side 3 coats, Basic funishings inside. I knew my money limitations and was still able to build a very nice coop. I am amazed at the lengths people go to on their coops, and I feel, your birds, your dime, your choice, go for it!

I am not in an unrealistic "love" with my chickens, however I do enjoy being their owner and watching their cycle of life. If it wasn't chickens it would probably be bees, horses, or some other creature. I have to be able to sleep at nite knowing that I am taking the best care possible for the animal life I have adopted. If that takes pouring more work and money into it, that is what I will do.
I know my chickens live in a better dwelling than many of the third world people do. I can't base what I do and what I spend on that fact or else I would never be able to eat at a restaurant, drink bottled water, go to a spa without feeling guilty. I have to enjoy what I have been blessed with, my health in order to be able to work hard for what I need and want.

Because I have to look at them and don't want to look at crap I make my coops look nice as well as be functional. I have coops made from recycled wood, and coops built from purchased wood done up to look fancy. I'm not rich so I work hard to be able to afford to build nice coops.

My main goal is that the birds in the coops be happy and safe. In turn my birds lay very well and I give 7 dozen eggs to the local womens shelter every other week.
