I don't think that it was the intent of the original poster to infer that people who spend a lot of money on their coop were "wrong or bad", he was just posing the idea that everything can be taken to excess, even chicken owning. Then again, I always tend to give people the benefit of a doubt, and I really enjoy discourses and discussions on what ever the subject. And if we are truly honest with ourselves, all of us are guilty of looking at someone and saying "well that's just excessive". But what is excessive to one person, is reasonable to the next, so live and let live. I have probably spent hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on my coop and run, not because it is the Taj Mahal of chicken coops (in fact it's really quite ugly), but because I have made it as secure against predators as humanly possible. And that takes a lot of fencing and wiring which costs money!
So, if you want to spend thousands and have the Taj Mahal of coops, great. More power to you. If you want to make it all out of recycled material and flea market finds, that's great too. The point is, we all own chickens, we all love our chickens and we all do the best that we can for our chickens. So can't we all just be happy with our "common ground"?
There is always common ground . . . people just disagree on how you get there.
