when is the soonest a chicken can lay an egg??

I have about 10 RIR's that look and sound very mature. But they are only 5 months old! how old was one of your hens when she laid her first egg? Is it possible if some of my hens lay eggs at only 5 months or do they need to be oldder? When is the soonest a hen can lay an egg? Their earlobes have changed color from a light pink color to a pearly white color. UUhgg... I just want them to start laying

yes, i put nesting boxes in about a week ago, but i never tried golfballs. AHHH, i so excited, ill go and get some golfballs right now

5 Months for RIR's or BR's? I've got 3 RIR's and 3 Barred Rocks, all 4 months this week. The friend that I got them from said some of the chicks from the same batches began laying this past saturday! I bought 2 ceramic craft eggs that are identical to hen eggs and yet almost indestructible. I might be getting ahead of myself, but I want to be ready.
