When mom leaves the nest

Our first broody just hatched 4 chicks. She has wandered from the nest now and I'm wondering if she will return? I have another hen sitting and can put the remaining viable eggs under her if necessary. I did already put some eggs that obviously weren't hers under the other hen, but not sure if that was the right thing to do.

No, it's important to collect newly deposited eggs to a broody's nest daily and have hers marked so they can be distinguished in order to prevent staggered hatches. As far as she's concerned those eggs are duds. A mother hen always have to make a decision to stay with eggs or feed babes. She will likely return to the nest when she is ready to take her chicks to sleep for the night.
