When setting eggs...

Hi guys,

Some new hatching eggs arrived today

and we're looking to set them at some point over
the weekend.

The last set only hatched 3 out of 12

with one of those being deformed and ... well 'special'...

My question is, does it matter if you add water to the bator from the begining? Last time we waited until
day 18 like we was advised but obviously the success rate was not great. Now someone has told us to add
the water at the start.

I don't want to add water if its going to cause them any harm, but I was thinking it might be worth a
try if it doesn't affect the eggs.

I'm getting ready to set my very first batch, so I'm a newbie at this. I'm wondering though, what was your humidity at last time without adding any water? It seems the people who don't add any water have 30-45% humidity already. I haven't received my eggs yet, but my humidity isn't that high, so I don't think dry incubation would be an option for me. Just wondering... maybe where you live (or because of air conditioning) your humidity is too low.

I add water from the start and then add MORE at day 18.... but I live in Phoenix/hades.

I think Shayna pretty well hit the nail right on the head. It depends on your particular situation. Different humidities work for different ones of us.

You tried dry incubation. Your success rate was pretty lousy. I don't know for sure that humidity was your problem, but if I has that bad a success rate, I'd try something different. As far as what to try differently, humidity is jumping up and down and waving flags, trying to get your attention, at least to me.

Something else to consider. Did you open and analyze the unhatched eggs to try to determine what went wrong? If you did open them, then you might have further information that shows it was not humidity that caused your problem. But if you don't have further information, I know what I would change for my next hatch.

I didn't open the eggs to have a look, to be honest I am unsure as to what to look for but I think
I'll open any unhatched next time.

As you've said it can't do much worse, so adding water seems worth ago.

I'm in England so our humidity probably is lower then a lot of areas as our heat is up and down.
