When would be the best time to order chicks................i would like to order right now so by the time spring come they will be old enough to go out into the pen next to the adults. But living up maine it get pretty cold up here and even thoe the last few day it been up in the forties. But knowing my luck i woould order them and the day the would be sent out it would go to below 0 degrees and i would like for them to be all alive. I ordered chicks from cackle hatchery in the summer and they came all alive buut like is said i want to oder now so they will be out in the coop by spring time.

Mine came today but I live in SC...

It would be better to wait til the temp warms up but they can get to you safely if all goes well. In life though all does not always go well!
I called the PO and the hatchery to keep up on shipping status/arrival day/pickup plan. I think it helped.
Good Luck!

Maine also has the ocean as a temperature moderating effect. I guess it depends a bit on how near the coast you are.

I'm in Mass, but ordered mine to be delivered late March so that I can have them out in the coop at 6 weeks old

I live in WI and mine are coming March 10...the trick is to order early VERY early (I rodered in early Dec already) or you don't get to have many choices...most of the good ones are gone already. You don't have to pay for most hatcheries until 2-4 weeks before delivery
