When should i put in pine shavings??

Last year I put down a couple of inches of pine shavings. Then I put paper towels on top. I used paper towels for a couple of weeks but only because I was bring in younger chicks. (I got them over a period of three weeks.

I was at the feed store yesterday and noticed that they were using wood pellets instead of shavings for the chicks they got in on Wed. This looked much more tidy. I did not see any of the chicks trying to eat the pellets. I did see them scratching in them quite a bit though.

By the way... I DID RESIST!

I did not buy any even though they had a couple of the breeds I am getting in early April. There was a tub with at least 100 RIR (at tubs of other breeds). They were calling to us and giving us the "please take me home look". My daughter and I just looked at them for awhile. I already forgot how small they are at this age.
