When should my hen start laying?

    I have a standard Cochin hen, she is about 12 weeks old now. I'm wondering when she'll start laying...I figured it wouldn't be for about 5 more weeks or so. But she has red-ish wattles and her comb has a pale hint of red. I heard this is a sign that she's ready to lay.

    17wks is pretty early though plenty of people have had girls start to lay that early. One of my birds just laid her first egg yesterday at 18wks, but none of the others have laid yet. To give you a comparison of what the comb wattles look like, this is my BR Hermione at about 15wks, very small comb and wattles but red face:

    This is what she looked like the day before she laid, comb and wattles have at least doubled in size:
