they will lay when they get ready. Usually before they start to lay they will sing the "egg song" and when there comb gets really red. They will also tend to squat when they get ready to lay. Look for signs like squatting, "egg song" and watch for the redness in the comb.

In my opinion, the egg song doesn't sound like a song at all. Or, maybe my girls just aren't great singers. To me, the egg song sounds like a lot of squawking. At first I thought they were making an alarm call or being upset. It is definitely different than their quieter more normal sounds. You never know how long it may take for a hen to lay. My friend has 12 buff orpingtons, 23 - 24 weeks old and 6 of them are laying. 2 of them have been laying for 3 weeks. She treats them all the same, and got them all at the same place. They just are each individual and mature at different rates. Waiting is hard. Hang in there!

ok thanks Im not sure if they have sang the song yet but I think some have been squawking more than usual but not too, too much

The egg song just sounds like whining chickens to me. I've been yelling out the kitchen window that they had better start making eggs with all that racket going on. Now they are giving me eggs, I can't complain about the noise anymore, lol.

My 18-19 week old leghorn just laid the first egg today. Here's the egg song, I couldn't put my video of her on here so here's one from Youtube.
