When to add some heat?

Yep! They LOVE it! Add in a few raisins and they'll really go nuts

Yep! Added heat as well for the same reason. I am so distraught that my favorite roo has half a frost-bitten comb now

I felt horrible that they got frostbite but the temps have been ridiculously cold here.I know some say it's humidity but regardless, mine seem to enjoy the extra warmth. I did make sure the heat lamps are not able to move though without human intervention. We screwed the clamps to a 2x4 that juts out over the roosts,so far so good.

Its in the 70's here in Texas. But we had 4 or 5 days of 19 at nite & never above freezing during the day. My chickens are not use to cold weather. They did fine the roo got some frost bite on his comb. The problem was the wind. My coop is built for hot weather not cold. I did not add heat but I did block off the windows with tarps.

My roo got a bit of frostbite when the temps were silly low (-20+) , but he's fine now. I decided to leave it alone rather than bother him and his comb is almost 100% now. The black parts just fell off and he's OK. My leghorns had a bit as well, but it never even went black and appears they will not even lose any comb.

well two of my four got frost bite and my husband....who does not care about the chickens at all....freaked out and went to home depot for the tools he would need for putting in a heat lamp. Not my idea and I insisted we secure the lamp beyond reason. lol...silly husband.

Great input. Thanks everyone. They did just fine. Gave them oatmeal for first time this morning as well. You'd think it was Christmas or something out there! They are talkin and munchin' away.

Hello Lardville! (manteca means lard) I'm in Garlictown myself.

I got a SLEET cloud that moved very slowly over my place yesterday, and dumped sleet that turned into slush that didn't go away, and at night it hardened up into hard ice!

"crisp" but sunny now.

Wow on the sleet! How much crop damage out there? It was colder friday nite for us. Had to worry more for my shrubs and tenders than the animals.

And,...yes Manteca means Lard. Name was huge mistake. Supposed to be Monteca, after a person. Signs got put up from the city w/ misspelling and name stuck. Also used to be a local lard co called Manteca Lard Co. Like saying Rio Grande River.
