My broody hatched two chicks last week. They are in the coop separated from the flock in a little pen. When should I open the gate to allow them out? She's a great mom and protects the chicks well.

You can try letting them out now and watch them for a while, the sooner the better because as they get older the mum gets less protective, at least thats the case with most of mine. Is the separate coop close enough to the big coop so that they can see each other?

It's in the coop with the others which is why I am concerned. I don't have a separate coop for the broody.

Oh, thats actually better, the flock is probably already used to them. Let them out and see how it goes, if it doesnt go well you can always just move them back. Good luck!

One of the two eggs she abandoned last week is hatching now. Maybe I'll wait until I see if mom will accept the new chicks before I give them freedom.
