Hello,
as a first time chicken owner I have been wondering when is the best time to let the PO know about the chicks coming in?
Mine are being shipped on the 18th, and are due to arrive the 19th or 20th. Being that the 16th is Presidents day I can't call on Monday.

Is 48 hours enough notice?
Is calling them a week in advance too soon?

The PO is a pretty busy, semi-urban (45 minutes outside of major city) office.

Any ideas on the best time to let them know?

17th or 18th will be fine. Give them your name and phone so they can call for you to pickup. Remember, be nice and they will be nice back. Most of the time they can hear the chciks and will make sure they come in to a warm place.

I'd call them on the 17th or 18th.
If you call too soon they're liable to forget all about your call.

I agree that the 17th or 18th will be fine

Thanks so much for your help!

DBF said to call on Friday, but I was just worried about the lapse in time since they are so busy. You've quelled my fears and I'll be calling them on the 17th or 18th!

We were expecting our chicks today or tomorrow, I stopped in personally on Saturday to let them know to be on the lookout for them. I'd think a business day or two ahead of time is good.

I call mine when I order them and tell them that they will be coming on a certain date then call them again a couple days before hand. that way they KNOW they should be coming and then oly 2 days before they are coming.

I went to the post office 2 days before delivery day with my name & # already written down with the hatchery name for them. Be ready to wake up early. I was so excited couldnt sleep all night. Got the call 6:00 am

I stopped into my post office also. Just to tell them you never know they might be busy or get busy and forget to give the note to the postmaster. I also had my heated seat on in my truck when I went to pick them up so it would be nice and warm. I also asked the PO if they would put them in a warm place until I got their, they were more than happy to.
Good luck with your new fuzzy butt babies.
