When to go outside in hot weather?

Thanks for all the posts. They answered many questions!

I have my first chicks - two buff orps and two black ausrtalorps. They are quite young. About two weeks I think.

I am concerned about heat as they are in a chicken tractor, but confined to the coop part. It's in the mid/high 80s F right now and the temp in the coop is hitting around 100 F at mid day.

It's early May here in Alabama USA.

I added another vent to the tractor and now the temp inside never gets above the temp outside. For the past week it's been 80 in there all day.

OK! Big celebration for a special day! - - Well the chicks think so!

The four little blighters spent their first day on the bottom level of the chicken tractor! I chased them around the coop area for a bit, caught them one by one and transferred them down to the - REAL WORLD!

I also moved their water down but -

- I forgot to put their food down. It was really sink or swim for them.

They were fine when I showed back up at around 4:30pm to move them back up to the penthouse for the night.

WOW! You would think they liked it down there. It took me the longest time to capture all 4 of them. One Buff Orp was like a race horse. No way was she going peacefully.

Anyway - they are all safe in bed and had a wonderful first day of discovery. At this point they can't work out the inclined ramp. Too big of a first step. I think this will last about 2 days.

Wow! Just two days later and they now go up and down the ramp with no coaxing ! They even make the final leap up into the Penthouse alone.

My smallest BA was so cute. She was the last one in and with her friends cheering she got up her nerve and made the big leap with tiny wings flapping.

Perfect landing inside!
