When To Harvest Peas??

Eat the pods with the peas in them raw! Yummy, the chickens will never know what they are missing, or so you will hope!

Cucumbers need rather warm soil, it's been quite cool here and ours haven't really taken off yet. Some black plastic over the mounds with a hole for the plants can help warm them up and keep the weeds down.

The young pea vines are also good in salads, but then you don't get as many peas. Pea flavor a whole lot sooner, though.
So we can eat the vines too?? I'm liking these peas more and more..

It's more like you can eat the shoots, the tender new growth. I think you could eat the mature leaves, but I think they'd be pretty tough.

We have some watermelons with black plastic around them. They are doing great compared to the watermelons and cucumbers that don't have the plastic.
Don't put it too tightly around the plants, but cut a good sized hole that will fit over the plants. Kind of like making a poncho... Put it over the the mound and secure the edges with soil. You can kind of cup the plastic at the top of the mound so that it catches some water and drains towards the plants.
