When to move to coop????

Yay!dont get me wrong I love my babies but momma hen thinks it would be nice for babies to leave the house and go to their coop.plus they are getting kinda cramped.should I put anything in the nesting boxes?

I don't have any yet and don't really know too much about it but from what I understand, a lot of people put straw (or hay??) in the nest boxes
 
Hi, New to the BYC site. We have moved our 5 week olds out to the coop and they spend most of the day in their pen. Daytime temps are in the upper 70s to upper 80s. At night they are in the coop with the heat lamp on.. We just got 4 new buff orpingtons, they are 2 weeks old and they are spending a couple of hours each day in their own mini pen which is inside the big pen. At night we are putting them in with the slightly older chicks so they get used to each other. So far, so god. Nighttime tems in the coop are staying in the 80's or close to the 80's. Everyone seems to be doing well!
 
They don't need nesting boxes yet and the last thing you want them to do is get used to sleeping in them, which they will do in a heartbeat. Cover those nest boxes with anything you can think of. I drape landscape fabric over mine at night when I'm integrating chicks with the adults and uncover them in the morning when I go out to feed. Since you don't have any currently laying adults, keep those boxes covered until you see that first egg or at least until they start squatting. After that, you can use straw, pine shavings or stuff like that in the nests.

6 weeks today..l moving them outside for a little romp in the dirt. I've put my babies in a pin so that the bigs and other outside babies can see them but not get to them... I did lose my cockerel chick this past Sunday to an unknown source but all 5 pullets are good. The 4 hand raised will go with 2 of the hen raised this weekend to my mom-n-laws to start their first flock and I'm cleaning and prepping my brooder for the 14 healthy eggs that I've put into 'lockdown'. My humidity doesn't want to go over 60 for some reason so I've added a shallow bowl of warm water into the incubator and, like the 2 I hatched under a headlamp in April I'll mist them on e a day to help with that. A few droplets of water from my fingers hatched both eggs last time. I've got a total of 37 eggs in the incubator but only 14 due to hatch this week. The others 5 days later. I've added a small barrier between the older eggs to avoid any problems. Wish me luck on all fronts... :pop
Time to sit back and watch.
