When to remove golf balls?

I waited until all of my girls were laying regularly in the nest box. I haven't had any problems since then.

I kept the golf balls in there. They seem to prefer the nests with them.

Didn't I read post where a chicken supposedly ate a golf ball... Better get her a 9 Iron if you wait til spring!

My Opinion is s soon as they find anyplace THEY feel is safe for their eggs that is is the laying spot. I find that a nice out of site dark laying box is a favorite of my girls.
P.S. Do a search... Obviously the chicken didn't. shouldn't COULDN'T Have swallowed a golf ball.... but it got a lot of response.

I keep two or three fake eggs in each nest box - for weeks and weeks. I recently combined two flocks in a new coop. The fake eggs have been in the nest boxes since I moved them into the new coop 3 weeks ago - and I plan to keep them there for a few more weeks because in addition to the hens already laying, I have some pullets that are just a few weeks away from laying. So I'll keep them in there until then. I also hoping the fake eggs will encourage one or more to go broody.
