I have four hens (2 Buff Orps, 1 Black A'lorp, 1 RIR) who are 13 weeks old. They were born late in the season (May 31) so they won't reach laying age until October so I am prepared that they may not lay at all until next spring. We live in Central Virginia. Do I need to offer oyster shell before they start laying or wait until I see the first early eggs? I'm unsure of the timing of this, especially since they might not need any supplement until next spring. Thanks for any insight from veteran chicken folk.

I offer Oyster Shells in a separate container after 15 weeks old. They take as needed.

I also have hens 2 years old.
They have a separate coop and pen.

Don't be surprised to find an egg before next year.
I got my Barred Rocks as day old Chicks the middle of August and they started to lay in January. GC
