When to start layer feed?

I have 3 Buff Orpingtons that are now 20 weeks old, none of them are laying yet. When do I start them on layer feed? Thanks!

I would wait until at least 2 of them are laying. You can start providing oyster shell now for them to take as needed.

Do not start them on layer feed until they are actually laying, the oyster should be provided as a supplement to their starter/grower feed.

Switch to layer after they've started laying. Or switch to an all flock feed now and offer free choice oyster shell.

Their combs and faces will redden up, they will want to play in the nest boxes, and they will squat when you reach over them. One of mine squats when I open the gate!

You can put golf balls or fake eggs in the nest boxes to help them know where you want them to lay. Getting them to stop laying on the floor or out in the run is a hard habit to break if they get started.

Thank you for all the great info! I will keep an eye on the combs, they are a bit pinkish yet. I may order some ceramic eggs on line? I've heard they are pretty realistic? We are anxiously awaiting those first eggs! My daughters just love these birds and this experience.

You can order special ones but golf balls work just fine if you can find some. Yes it’s really fun waiting for the first eggs! Sometimes agonizing...
