When to switch feed

I like pelleted feeds, but chicks can't eat it, and the Purina Flock Riser here only comes in crumble. Either is fine, and some of the feeders are better at managing billing out than others.
Buy a good feed that's fresh where you shop, by the mill date on each bag. I think that layer feeds are marginal when fed to bigger birds, and are not a good choice for any but actively laying hens.

I changed brands a while back and the new stuff is smaller pellets than the other. Most of my chickens made the switch without missing a beat but some of them absolutely gorge on the smaller pellets. I don't know if it's the flavor or size but my New Hampshires vacuum that stuff up like they've been starved for a week. Big V feeds produced in McAlester, OK and sold at Orsheln, if anyone cares to know.
