When to trim spurs

Have done it more than once, over 23 years with 3 dogs, it's scary and can bleed for hours.
Started using dremel with coarse sanding drum instead of clippers,
if you grind too far it's just a tiny dot of blood.
I doubt our dog would sit for that. It took a long time to train her with the clippers let alone something that makes a lot of noise. I just clip a little off once a week until they are a good length and then just maintain them

It took some help of family members but we have used a dremel to shorten my roosters spurs. I didn’t have a choice at 3 years old his spurs were growing almost into his legs! That was about 6 months ago, the spurs have stayed dull and continued to grow need to trim them again soon. Have some blood stopper on hand just in case. My vet recommended if you don’t have quick stop you can use flour instead. My Roo didn’t bleed at all but we didn’t take very much length off. We just took him off the roost at night and wrapped him in a towel. I held him tight and someone held his leg and someone ran the drimel. It worked well for us!
